Productivity and Rainy Days
Sometimes I can’t seem to get started on what I know I should be doing. Usually this falls on a rainy day that is grey and quiet. I used to try and bully my way through it…to be productive. But I have finally realized that slowing down and taking the time to think about where I am and what I am doing is productive — just in a different way.
It hasn’t been that long ago when there was automatic down time built into our lifes. You couldn’t just email a proposal or your thoughts or your answer within seconds. There was no word processing; typewriters meant that you couldn’t edit as you typed so you spent more time thinking about what you were trying to say. Not even the richest families had 500 television channels or the internet to get lost in.
In this world of instant communication, instant information and instant entertainment we have eliminated our thinking time, our down time — the time between idea and action. Some days I don’t feel as if I breathe between tasks let alone slow down to consider my actions and their consequences on me, my loved ones and my world.
So when it is stormy outside, look at it as God’s way of not only nourishing the flora and fauna but also providing a reminder to us to nourish ourselves.
So if it is raining where you are, give yourself time to curl up and consider your world. I promise you will face the next day with a renewed sense of purpose and energy.
